WAKE ISLAND
ATOLL
Shipping out to Sea.
Wake Island ATOLL is an isolated air strip with minimal support services. Our crews had to prepare how to handle the remote area, limited facilities and anticipate every need in regards to not only preparing for our portion of the work, but with off time distractions as well.
Remote Location
One of the first challenges was loading up the barge in Seattle with anything and everything our crews may need and then watching it chug away from the dock among the waves.
ABOUT WAKE ATOLL
Wake Atoll is situated west of Honolulu and northeast of Guam; it has an area of about two and one-half square miles.
Composed of a reef-enclosed lagoon, the atoll consists of three coral islands (Peale, Wake and Wilkes), built upon an underwater volcano. The atoll’s central lagoon is the volcano crater; the islands are part of the rim. Wake Island, the main or center section of the “wishbone”, is much the largest of the three islands. “V”-shaped and pointed towards the southeast, Wake Island comprises the outer perimeter of the eastern half of the atoll.
